"A Motive for Murder" is the first of a three book series in which Misty Sales, an Aussie journalist for a paranormal magazine, gets in the middle of a war between two witch covens. It is a true battle of good versus evil and a race to see who will find a page from a book of witchcraft that enables the holder to stay young forever.<br /><br />Misty is swept off her feet by Douglas, a seemingly honest man, with good intentions. Then there is Jamie. Everyone around Misty is warning her to stay away from this man; the man who tells her to trust no one. So, what is this page that everyone is seeking and why does all her new 'friends' think that she has it? Who can she trust?<br /><br />Even though it was the second time around, I enjoyed this cozy mystery and give it 5 stars.</span></span></td></tr>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">“Stalking Jack the Ripper” by Kerri Manscalco is a fictional story about a young girl who has an unusual love of science. Her uncle, Dr. Jonathon Wadsworth, teaches science to young men in Harrow School for Boys. Part of the course is based on the Jonathon’s experiments involving the autopsies that he conducts in his lab.</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;"> </span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead of taking tea and working on embroidery, as ladies of the day spent their days, Audrey Rose is only interested in her uncle’s work, even though she knows it isn’t proper. Finally, after much pleading she is allowed to dress like a boy, and sit in on his class. That is where she meets Thomas.</div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
At that time, the headlines were full of Jack the Ripper, or the Leather Apron. Audrey Rose is something of a snoop, a want to be detective, and is putting herself in danger to find this monster who is killing women. Thomas starts to go with her, at first to protect her, but then he becomes intrigued with the Leather Apron, too. Three young women crossed their autopsy table before Audrey Rose finds The Ripper.</div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
This book was well written, but just didn’t hold my attention. The first couple of chapters were intriguing, but then it became very boring. The focus switched from finding Jack, to the relationship between Audrey Rose and Thomas and back to Jack at the end. I found myself counting the pages I had read before I could start another book. This book was not at all what I expected it to be. It didn’t capture the mystery of Jack and, worse than all, “Stalking Jack the Ripper” was too predictable. I give it one star. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK1rMIcRrZjfDReENHDvwRa_Y60ISV2uA2tq7CGDDF7W7yXAg_t548hmMPGyQg1OCGhsjmyezwV7thALXqnWkFSt1vdc6p-Wv8mq_78ITViNL3vzw5waBWSkPyGW3WektWR1OgVHirjCk/s1600/29605481.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK1rMIcRrZjfDReENHDvwRa_Y60ISV2uA2tq7CGDDF7W7yXAg_t548hmMPGyQg1OCGhsjmyezwV7thALXqnWkFSt1vdc6p-Wv8mq_78ITViNL3vzw5waBWSkPyGW3WektWR1OgVHirjCk/s320/29605481.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Christmas Mystery, by James Patterson with Richard Dilallo, is the second of the detective Luc Moncrief series. This novella was published by James Patterson own company out of Little, Brown and Company publishing house. Bookshots are mostly ebooks, although I have one in paperback. They are novellas, less than 150 pages and less than $5.00 and are just right for people who want to read a book in a day or two.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I skipped the first of the series because I thought, what better time to read about a Christmas mystery than the week before the beloved holiday. The book is a delightful story about a French detective and his American partner, who stamp out crime in New York City. The Frenchman, Detective Moncrief, comes from a very rich family and thinks nothing of dropping $150,000 on a painting, which he just happens to see on his lunch hour. His counterpart, K. Burke, is quite the opposite. While he loves to spent his time walking the streets looking for trouble, she is a ‘by the book’ cop, who is concerned with paperwork. She wants to let the boss know their actions on a case, each step of the way and Moncrief plays it fast and loose. When he gets in trouble, Burke is always there to back him up. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In this story, they are called on a case in which a rich debutante is murdered. The partners noticed the theft of all of the artwork that she owned and, since that was right up Moncrief's alley, they go after the thieves as well as the killers. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As I said before, this is a delightful story, full of dry humor, for which Patterson is known. I finished the book in two sittings, only because I could not keep my eyes open. It was impossible to put down the next day. I can’t wait to read more about this incredible duo. I give Mr. Patterson 5 stars.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03401619154991077782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5445539486186406297.post-58588433669262219192016-12-09T09:25:00.001-08:002016-12-09T09:29:31.857-08:00The Gourmet Detective<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Parker Pyne
is at it again. Ms. Christie’s “social
worker of yesteryear” is answering the needs of a soldier who was bored with
his life. Major Wilbraham has just
returned from East Africa and he is dissatisfied with his life in the slow lane. He needs excitement. As usual, Mr. Pyne provides what his customer
needs. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

the Major is a gentleman and not afraid of danger, so he is called upon again,
to save the day. Unbeknownst to him, he was living out a plot that was written by
another well-known character in Ms. Christie’s imagination: Miss Oliver, the
apple eating writer. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Agatha
Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are old friends of mine. This short story by Ms. Christie, features
Parker Pyne as her new main character. I
found this story delightful and light, but definitely veering away from the
normal Christie mystery. I didn’t find
the mystery or the murder in this book. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

and entertaining. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">'The Apprentice', by Tess Gerritsen, is the second of the Rizzoli and Isles series. When Rizzoli finally puts Warren Hoyt, otherwise known as The Surgeon, in prison for life, she thought that she was through with him. Just like 'The Surgeon', which was first of this series, 'The Apprentice' is a real page turner. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Detective Rizzoli gets called into a string of murders because the MO is the same as her old nemesis, Warren Hoyt. Hoyt, the man of her nightmares. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hoyt. The man who pinned her to the floor with a scapel in both of her hands. Hoyt. The devil incarnate. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Even from his prison cell, it seems as though he was still killing. A copycat? Doubtful. Jane Rizzoli believed that Hoyt had somehow engineered these murders. Every detail was there, from the teacup on the husband's knee to the folded nightgown in the bedroom. It was Hoyt all over. Jane gets the courage up to face Hoyt in prison. She is looking for some answers to questions that would help her solve these murders. Hoyt, who is obsessed with Jane, was pleased that she had come to him, but was no help, of course. </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Maura Isles, the Medical Examiner, helps to keep her best friend, Jane, on an even keel, working tirelessly to find this maniacal killer. </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Every murder that Jane worked in the case, brings more memories of Hoyt to her mind. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We see the world through Rizzoli's eyes and feel the hate that she has for the one man that she cannot get out of her life, Hoyt. Ms. Gerritsen has done it again. I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Apprentice' and gave it 5 stars. I am looking forward to more of Rizzoli and Isles books.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Floor Four” by A. Lopez, Jr. is
about three junior high school boys and their bravado. It starts with a neighbor,
Jake, who tries to scare the boys away from playing in the haunted hospital
across the street. He tells a ghost
story about a serial killer who dies in the hospital, which only intrigues the
boys more. They dare each other to go onto
the fourth floor, the most haunted area in the building, because that’s where
Coleman, the serial killer, died. They
get as far as the third floor landing, when they hear something from above…chains
hitting the floor and a sickle being sharpened on the handrail. But the serial killer is dead. It this his ghost come back to haunt the
hospital or a copycat killer who hangs out and scares kids away?? <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">From the first page, I could see that
“Floor Four” was written for a much younger audience. It was so predictable that anyone who ever watched

I could give this book a half star, I would.
As it is, I give it one star. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Sophie Kelly, is book one in a mystery series.
The book is centered around two unusual feral cats and Kathleen Paulson,
who is called to a small town Mayville Heights to restore a hundred year old
library. The town is preparing for the Wild Rose Summer Music Festival, which
has for its conductor, the well-known, very obnoxious Gregor Easton. He is found dead by Kathleen one
morning. In looking into the murder, Kathleen
finds out that Mr. Easton has a secret which she suspects is the reason for his
death. Meanwhile, the feral cats that
followed her home, surprise Kathleen by the “tricks” they do, which no other
cat can do. In the end, they use those tricks to save the owner when she
reveals the killer to all. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Kathleen comes off on paper as a “real” person. Ms. Kelly’s other characters were great as a
support cast. All in all, I found this
book a lighthearted story, during which, when I wasn’t trying to figure out
what was coming next, I was laughing at the cat’s antics. I give “Curiosity Thrilled the Cat” five out

read this series.</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If Ms. Dobbs
wanted to entertain her audience, she succeeded. “Ghostly Paws” is a cozy mystery which,
unlike most cozy mysteries that I have read, actually has a plot that keeps the reader’s attention throughout the book.
It takes place in the small town of Mystic Notch, and it has as its
heroine a book shop owner, Wilhelmina Chance.
Ms. Chance has a habit of getting involved with matters that should be
left to the police, but she can’t resist. Fortunately, she has a cat, Pandora,
who, more than once, seems to step in and saves the day. Oh, and by the way, Ms.
Chance and Pandora have an amazing secret; they can see ghosts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The story starts
out in the library, where Wilhemina finds Lavina, the librarian, dead. Of course, since she is Chance’s good friend (and
she appeared to her and Pandora, to ask Chance to find her killer), Wilhemina
attempts to do so. She starts to go
through the town’s citizens one by one, and finding each has a motive to commit
the crime. Thankfully, Pandora and her feline friends are on top of the
situation.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This delightful book
is one of a series, and I can hardly wait to read the next one. I give Ms. Dobb’s cozy five stars out of
five.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The Brink” by Mark Fadden, published by iUniverse, is a
riveting book from the first to the last pages.
Have you ever asked yourself what it would be like if all of the power
people including the multi-rich, bankers, and politicians, got together and plotted
to shape “international financial conspiracies” to eventually raise them in power
and create a single world government? No
more nations; no more democracy; no more freedom. That is the premise of this edge-of-the-seat thriller.

nothing but her panties and bra. She is
running for her life, as men are chasing her, guns blaring. This brings Danny out of his funk immediately,

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I am recording this for two reasons. The first: so you understand…And second: to
preserve”. This is where “The Family
Buried” by W.R. Parrish, tells us the reason for this short story. And yet, it is so vague, as to entice reader to
read on about the account of a man. A
lonely man, whose sanity is in question very early in the story. The
story is based on a single character who finds a dreadful secret about his family;
a secret so gruesome as to drive any normal man to the brink of insanity. “ …I’d been led to the container by mysterious
circumstances.” </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The style of this story
is no different from “One Day in October”, a novel written by Mr. Parrish. It is full of metaphors that describe the surroundings
so well, that the reader can see in their mind’s eye, feel, taste, hear, and
smell what our character experiences. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This narrative left me with the same feeling of dread that
the character felt, which only goes to show how well Parrish writes. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> In his background, he has a mixture of

wrote. “The Family Buried” is 20 pages
long and a tale that reads very fast.
One warning: do not read at

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“If Looks Could Kill” by Kate White, is the first of a
series featuring the character, Bailey Weggins.
This series is full of suspense and mystery, with a soupcon of wit. It takes place in the fast paced world of
magazines. Baily is a freelance writer
who works for <i>Gloss, </i>a magazine aimed
at today’s woman. She contributes </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">true crime articles </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">to
the publication . Her sometimes friend, Cat, is the editor
of </span><i style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gloss</i><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, and she is in trouble.</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Cat is the object of an attempted murder
spree, and she turns to Bailey to find her would-be killer.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I gave this book three stars however, if I could, I would
give it three and half. I enjoyed the
plot and liked the main character. However,
I found most of the supporting characters almost exactly alike, which made it
hard for me to follow who did what to whom. This book is an entertaining and fast read Although it is a novel, it has the feel of short novel and a cozy mystery. I will
try the next Bailey Weggins book before
I make a decision to quit the series.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
